We are currently in a very difficult situation. The COVID-19 coronavirus that the world has encountered, in addition to human fragility, has shown how well the health systems of different States function. Indeed, we are talking about a pandemic, and no institution, no doctor or virologist was prepared for such an emergency, not even the best health system in the world.

Italy is one of the first countries to face the pandemic. Thanks to the measures taken by the government and the coordinated work of doctors, the country is effectively coping with the virus, which confirms the leading position of the national health service in the international arena.

Every year, Bloomberg publishes a rating of countries with the most effective health care system in the world. The calculations involve countries with the following requirements: life expectancy of more than 70 years, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of at least us $ 5,000, and a minimum population of 5 million people. All data required for processing and comparison comes from the world health organization, the world Bank, and the International monetary Fund.

According to the rating, Italy is ranked fourth among the best health systems in the world. The country has a well-developed system of specialized medical services, which has about 295 specialized medical institutions per 100,000 inhabitants, which is 50 times more than in Germany, 100 times more than in the UK and 115 times more than in France.

Registration is free for holders of a work, family or business residence permit in Italy (residence permit). Students can register for a fee (150 euros per year). Registration is valid for the entire duration of the residence permit. After filling out the documents, a plastic medical insurance card with the specified tax number is issued – “tessera sanitaria”, which guarantees treatment in Italian medical institutions, as well as receiving emergency medical care in any EU country. A family doctor is also appointed, who writes prescriptions, gives directions to specialists, for visits and hospitalization.

In Italy, in case of a critical health situation, you must contact the emergency medical service at the toll – free number 118. The task of the team is to quickly provide really urgent care, for example, stop the bleeding, remove the cardiogram, make the necessary injections, and deliver the patient to the hospital, where a full examination will be conducted.

Thus, the Italian experience of organizing the health system deserves close attention. High responsibility of Italian doctors, well-established system of their training, investments in health and science, outstanding achievements of Italian medicine, well-equipped University clinics leave no doubt that Italian medicine has every reason to continue to occupy an honorable place among the leaders of world health.
